An ideal gas is taken through an isothermal process. If it does 2000 J of work on its environment, how much heat is added to it?

After going through the question, we can list some data as,

workdone dW = 2000J

isothermal process dU = 0

To find , Heat added dQ = ?

Solution –

From first law of thermodynamics we have

dQ = dU + dW

In the question it is given that the gas is taken through isothermal process, i.e the change in internal energy should be ZERO i.e dU =0

therefore, dQ = 0 + dW

dQ = dW = 2000J
